Why a bike box is bad for your bike

If you’ve ever been on the wrong end of a damaged bike in a box, frustration aside, it’s easy to wonder how couriers actually manage to do so much damage and in some cases damage a bike but not the box!

The fact is your household name couriers don’t like bikes in boxes. They are too big, too heavy and a pain for them to move. Throw in staff that don’t care how they handle them, multiple hops/depots etc and boxes stacked horizontally so they are crushed, damage is almost inevitable.

And to add insult to injury, if you try and claim off them for loss or damage, they either don’t want to know or offer a paltry amount that in no way reflects the actual value of the bikes they’ve lost or damaged. They insult you by asking you pay them to insure your goods against loss or damage by them.

If you take a step back and look at how couriers handle bikes, it’s quite incredible how they get away with it. Switching courier isn’t really an option either because they’re all as bad as each other. You’re left trying to find the least-worst and just crossing your fingers when they take the bike off you.

The uncomfortable truth is that posting a bike in a box is bad for everyone involved. Customers bikes get damaged, Retailers have to deal with the problem and pay for the issue to be fixed, Couriers don’t want the business and will charge a premium for a poor service.
